James & Clara

Back when James C. Jones and his wife Clara bought the island in 1921, they were told it was not farmable land so it was useless. Well, nobody could tell James and Clara what they could or couldn’t do! One hundred years later, look what has stood the test of time.

This wasn’t the first time James was told he couldn’t do something. In 1916, there were talks that the St. Louis Cardinals would be sold. Jones would not hear of his beloved team being sold off! So he rounded up a team of investors and in 1917, he bought the Cardinals for $375,000, keeping them safely in their home city.

Next time somebody tells you that you can’t do something, think about James and Clara making the impossible possible.
