Founded 100 Years Ago

The Hideaway at Xanadu Island was founded 100 years ago. This is such a special property with a history that deserves to be recognized and preserved forever, which is why we’re going through the process of getting our beloved property listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Hideaway was originally owned by James C. Jones and his wife Clara, who lived in St. Louis. He was a prominent lawyer who bought the St. Louis Cardinals in 1917 and saved the team from leaving the city.

The two were fishing on Bass Lake (now called Elbow Lake) and came across this 4-acre undeveloped island. They absolutely fell in love and had to have it. The farmer who owned it said it couldn’t be built on.

The Jones’ bought the property anyway and built a 6,000-square-foot house (now called The Lake House) and three guest cottages — which are all still on the island today.

Come take a step back in time at The Hideaway.
